Home Remedies for Dry Skin, Tips and Benefits

Damage Skin

Everyone loves when their skin feels soft, supple, hydrated and glowing. However, there are quite a few roadblocks in achieving this all the time. One such common roadblock is dry, dehydrated skin. Having dry skin is an uncomfortable experience and can also make a person conscious of their appearance. One of the common problems of dry skin is itchy and flaky skin. But don’t worry, it is an extremely common phenomenon and can be corrected with a little time and some effort.

Before you learn about the measures and methods to fight dry skin, let’s find out what is causing your skin to become dry and flaky.

Causes of Dry Skin

1) Neglecting the moisturizer

If you are suffering from dry skin, the chances are that you have been ditching your moisturizer. Your skin needs that extra boost of moisture, and hence moisturizing is very essential. You can achieve this by either investing in a good natural moisturizer or follow some home remedies that help your skin to moisturize.

2) Weather Changes

During winters, the moisture from your skin is pretty much sucked out. This leaves your skin feeling flaky and itchy. On the other hand, too much exposure to air-conditioning in summers will also have the same effect on your skin.

3) Using Harsh Soaps

The soap you use on a regular basis can either make or break your skin. A lot of soaps contain antibacterial and lathering agents. These soaps, though they generate a lot of lather and gives you the appearance of being squeaky clean are stripping your skin of its natural oils, further drying your skin out. Hence it is better to avoid these harsh chemical filled soaps and instead use natural soaps.

4) Medication

Another common reason for dry skin is not what you are applying to it, but rather what you are consuming daily. Medicines that are taken regularly for diabetes or acne breakouts can dry your skin out in the long run.

5) Skin Conditions

If you are diagnosed with a skin condition such as psoriasis or eczema, your skin is more prone to being dry. However, this is a medical condition and must be treated accordingly with guidance from a dermatologist.

What Preventive Measures Can You Take Against Dry Skin?

Just as the famous saying “prevention is better than cure”, there are ways to make sure that your skin does not become dry or flaky in the first place, to begin with. Some foolproof preventive measures are

1) Moisturize

Moisturize at home

Since not moisturizing is a common cause of dry skin, using a moisturizer twice a day on your skin will ensure that your skin remains hydrated throughout the day. Pick a moisturizer that does not contain artificial fragrances or alcohol. Alcohol content in skin care products tends to make the skin drier which is undesirable. Also, rather than moisturizing your skin when it is dry, coat your skin with a sufficiently thick layer of the moisturizer when it is damp. This makes sure that the moisture is locked within your skin, making your skin appear healthy and beautiful. You can even use coconut oil for this step if you want a natural moisturizer.

2) Tweak your Bath Routine

For those of you who love taking a hot, hot shower, you might want to stay away from that if you want your skin to retain its natural oils. Hot water strips the skin of moisture, making it dry and itchy. Instead, opt for a lukewarm shower which will considerably soothe your skin. Also, make sure that the soap or body wash that you use is not made of harsh chemicals like sulphates and parabens. Ingredients such as glycerine and petroleum jelly in your soaps will make sure that the layer of moisture on your skin is retained.

3) Exfoliation

It is a common misconception that people who belong to the dry skin family do not need to exfoliate their skin. On the contrary, it is equally important for people with dry skin to exfoliate at least once a week. Doing so will ensure that all the flaky and patchy bits of your skin which the dead skin cells are typically are removed from the surface, exposing soft and supple skin underneath. If chemical exfoliants do not work for you, use a mixture of sugar and honey to scrub yourself clean!

4) Hydration from Within

If your body is dehydrated, it will be visible on your skin. Thus, make sure that you are drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. This will not only flush out all the toxins in your body and reduce acne breakouts but will also hydrate and moisturize your skin from within. With time, you will observe that your skin looks healthy and beautiful. Also, eating a spoonful of flax seeds every day will help get rid of itchy and flaky dry skin.

The astringent properties of rose water also help in maintaining the pH of the skin which neither dries the skin out too much nor makes it super oily.

5) Bananas
