What Is Earth Day And Why It Is Celebrated

What Is Earth Day?

Earth Dayis an annual event that is globally celebrated every year on the 22nd of April. Founded by American senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, the day is organized to support the cause for environmental protection and is all about appreciating the uniqueness of our planet Earth along with its unbelievable biodiversity. Presently, the day is the largest secular observance in the world and people from different culture, communities and social backgrounds stand in solidarity to acknowledge the beautiful interdependent relationship that coexists between all the species of planet Earth.

Facts And History Of Earth Day

History Of Earth Day

In 1969, a US senator from Wisconsin named Gaylord Nelson witnessed an impactful student anti-war movement after the incident of the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara. He was so motivated by the whole event that it made him realise a significant fact, why not channel and infuse this same energy with the emerging public consciousness regarding air and water pollution in order to support and protect the environment and embrace it into the national political agenda. Hence, in the year 1970, Nelson decided on a date between spring break and final exams that was April 22 and marked it as the International Earth Day, where 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to participate in massive protests and rallies against the deterioration of the environment. Interestingly, this venture received support from both the Republicans and the Democrats which was a rare political alliance. Amongst the various earth day facts, you will be glad to know that it is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world and the year 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. As of now, more than 1 billion people from 193 countries orchestrate various events to demonstrate the cause of environmental protection, coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

When Is Earth Day 2019?

International Mother Earth Day 2019 will be celebrated all across the world on Monday, April 22nd 2019.

Earth Day 2019 Theme

Every year the Earth Day Network proposes a theme that focuses on a particular environmental issue. The theme for this year’s World Earth Day is “Protect Our Species”. The primary endeavour behind this idea is to rescue and protect several species that are on the verge of extinction because of factors like climate change, human-wildlife conflict, deforestation, genetic vulnerability, pollution and illegal poaching. Habitat loss has made a number of endangered spices shift from one place to another and if the phenomenon continues then eventually it will lead to their complete disappearance in few years down the line.

Activities You Can Do On Earth Day

You can also contact the Earth Day organizers or look for such opportunities online to get more information about numerous Earth Day events.

5. Organise A Green Party

The concept of green party is a relatively modern and innovative approach. It feels similar to any house party where you call up your friends, family or colleague, hang out with them, eat lots of good wholesome food and make merry. The only point of difference is that the topic of discussion revolves around eco-conscious living and how you can contribute as a community in making the Earth a better place to live. So, on this International Mother Earth Day take out your favourite green mates and your biodegradable silverware, brew some organic beer and tons of beautiful memories.

Community gardening activities allows the opportunity for people belonging from diverse backgrounds to come together and collectively contribute in the cultivation of a variety of vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. In case you don’t have a lawn of your own, look for communal gardens or rooftop gardens and get ready to roll up your sleeves and dig up some earth.

7. Voice Your Opinions To The Government Representatives

Inspired by the spirit and history of Earth Day, consider this occasion a great excuse to pen down your thoughts regarding various environmental issues and send it to the governing authorities. Everyone has their own personal grievances like a person is going through drinking water crisis in their area and someone else is a victim of industrial pollution. No matter how trivial or magnanimous the problem is, mail a letter to the government representative on Earth Day to ensure that your voice is heard.

8. Educate People And Raise Awareness

It falls under each and every individual’s responsibility to develop an awareness about the protection and preservation of our environment. Sadly, a lot of people deliberately avoid this duty without any concern or guilt and abuse the gifts presented to us by The Mother Nature. You can organize a fascinating educative session in schools and local clubs to encourage young kids in order to make them conscious of how to opt for more efficient use of energy. Promoting environmental realization can also be done by setting up peaceful demonstrations in association with various social groups to highlight the importance of Earth Day.

So, wake up the inner artist in you and gather things like extra buttons, used bottles, jars and cans, damaged tiles, fabric leftover, old colorful articles, CDs and DVDs, corks and pieces of yarn to prepare an interesting collage of things that can be used for a variety of decorative work.

Although going vegetarian for a day cannot be really considered as one of the earth day activities but it is definitely a healthy practice that can make a staggering difference. Shreoshi Mitra
Hello everyone, this is Shreoshi from the cultural capital of India, Kolkata. Well, I have been associated with the content and creative writing for more than a year now after I completed my post-graduation in Journalism and Mass Communication last year (2018). While doing my graduation as an English honour’s student, I fell in love with the subject both literally and metaphorically. As a matter of fact, I recently started teaching a bunch of kids as well, because why not! There’s no harm in spreading a little knowledge right! Writing started as hobby-cum-passion which should become a profession for me. It gives me an immense sense of freedom and helps to channelize my thoughts well. Writing for Anveya has opened up new horizons for me as I realised my articles regarding personal care, home care, and wellness can influence someone’s perception and way of thinking. While a lot of people wanted me to take up political science as my major because I was one of the top scorers in the city, I always believed that creativity and art is where my heart belongs… and it really feels good to know that I was right from the beginning.
