Benefits of Using a Facial Mask

DIY face masks for glowing skin

1. For Clean Skin Pores

One of the basic functions of a face mask is to unclog the pores on the face. Face masks and especially peel-off masks remove dead skin cells, excess oil and other pollutants from the pores making the skin look fresher and refining the pores.

2. For Reducing Fine Lines

Regular use of face masks can help prevent fine lines and other signs of aging like dark spots and wrinkles. Skin feels soft and smooth.

3. For Hydrating the Skin

Water from the masks seeps deep into the skin epidermis and softens it. This makes the skin well hydrated and moisturized. Skin which is properly hydrated looks more smooth and fresh, and is easy to apply make-up on.

4. For Firmer Skin

Face masks help fight damage by free radicals, and also increase collagen production in the skin, making it more firm and fresh-looking. Loose skin makes anyone look older than their age, so regular use of some specific face masks (which will be discussed later) is highly recommended.

Things to Keep in Mind when Applying Face Masks

1. Starting with a Clean Face

It is extremely necessary to clean your face (especially the T-zone) before you apply a mask. It is necessary for the mask to penetrate into your skin.

2. Open the Pores

Applying the same logic as before, it is advisable that you prepare your skin by opening up its pores by taking a hot shower or using steam. You could also just put a hot towel on your face for a while.

3. Use a Face Roller

This is more of a suggestion than a requirement. A face roller can help create microscopic channels on your face for the mask to penetrate through. These rollers are easily available online.

4. Know your Skin Type and Needs

It is essential that your skin treatment regimen caters to your specific needs. For this, one also needs to know their own skin. Target your skin type (normal, oily, dry, combination) and issues (blemishes, acne, wrinkles, uneven tone, pigmentation etc).

5. Keep in Mind the Sitting Time

Always look at the instructions and sitting time carefully, and rinse away or peel off your mask accordingly. This is necessary because after the prescribed time limit, many face masks become very dry and it’s a whole new hassle to remove them. Secondly, some ingredients might irritate the skin when left on for too long, like lemon (which bleaches the skin if kept on for long).

6. Layering Different Masks

This is very much possible and will not minimize the effect of the masks. You can stack up different masks on each other. This also helps in better penetration and retention of the various useful ingredients.

7. Using a Timer

Again, an advice for those who like to multitask. You should set a timer if you’re about to get so that you don’t fall prey to a messy rinsing or itching.

8. Closing the Pores

Of course, you do not want your freshly cleaned skin to be ridden with dirt as soon as you’re done with your face mask, so always follow up by rinsing with cold water (unless strictly stated otherwise).

9. Moisturizing

After you’ve cleaned your skin, you need to seal in the goodness. And that is exactly why face masks are always followed with a gentle moisturizer.

10. Limit Usage

It all feels nice, but face masks should always be used in a limit. Do not overdo anything. Even if you want to try stacking one mask on another, limit it to two masks only. Using face masks should be done twice or maximum thrice a week, unless clearly stated otherwise.
